9. The Creative Colouring Book for Grown Ups by Various: £8, amazon

Inspired by the likes of Moscow, Paris and the illustrators’ home, London, this book presents some worlds you’ll half recognise and other more fantastical cityscapes to colour in and make your own. The paper’s heavy duty so pens won’t bleed through and East London-based designers Rosie Goodwin and Alice Chadwick have included a little treasure hunt of extra images within their exceptionally detailed illustrations for you to find.

If you find patterns too repetitive, The Time Garden is an intricately drawn story by Korean artist Daria Song that starts with a Narnia-esque cuckoo clock and moves through page-upon-page of magical landscapes, drawn in superb detail. The cover’s also colourable and there’s a ‘to/from’ page, making this one a fab gift.

I purchased this coloring book for my son for Christmas. I found it very interesting until I came to “To be Titled” and “Monument” pages which are a black page and…Read more

Now a New York Times bestseller!Just add color! For anyone who loves creativity and contemporary art, or who simply loves the joy of coloring, comes Outside the Lines, a striking collection of illustrations from more than 100 creative masterminds, including animators, cartoonists, fine artists, graphic artists, illustrators, musicians, outsider artists, photographers, street artists, and video game artists.

With contributions from Keith Haring, AIKO, Shepard Fairey, Exene Cervenka, Keita Takahashi, Jen Corace, Ryan McGinness, and more, Outside the Lines features edgy and imaginative pieces ready for you to add your own special touch.

5.0 out of 5 starsIt’s So Beautiful, It’s A Collectible. Astounding Pop Art.

She added: “Meditation, whether secular or otherwise, has known benefits to mind, body and spirit. When focusing deeply on a simple yet safe task, other anxieties become less present, less pervasive.”

You get 96 pages of nature-inspired patterns here – the likes of leaves, petals, trees and landscapes – by artist and designer Graham McCallum. The thick, good-quality pages are filled edge to edge with designs that get increasingly complex as you work through them. If leaves aren’t you thing, McCallum also has another pattern volume with drawings to colour from a wider range of influences.

I really love this book. It’s inspired my creativity and as the title said, it’s an artist’s coloring book. There’s complexity in the images that can be a hurdle but it’s satisfying to bridge. And, with artwork featured from so many talented artists it’s a good buy.

It definitely leans abstract, modern, hipster, but if that seems kinda cool to you you’ll love this.My solitary gripe about this book is the paper. Considering it’s a coloring book for artists, a paper with some more weight to it would be appreciated so that I could use watercolor pencils in it.

My last attempt to use Derwent Inktense in the book yielded a wrinkled mess even after I ironed it, which luckily looked cool on the image but would make me hesitate to try it again.Aside from that it’s my fav, can’t wait to try her next one!

Mandala Coloring Book: World’s Most Beautiful Mandalas for Stress Relief and Relaxa…

Inspired. This is a real coloring book for adults. Beautiful pop art. It’s something you will treasure having. Great artists are featured, and it is sometimes reminiscent of the old days of Liquid Television.

It’s completely unique. It stands alone in its category. The art challenges it’s contributors in the way good art should. It’s an absolutely gorgeous book you don’t want to kiss out on.

I bought this for my 12 year old cousin who loved an “outside the box” coloring book I got her little sister, but to whom I wanted to give something a little more grown up. Many gorgeous illustrations of many different styles.

Something for everyone. The cover and paper seem to be very high quality. There is also only one picture on a page with nothing on the back but the artist and other information, making coloring with markers a great option.

. I’m thinking about getting one for myself as well. However, I felt the need to remove 2 of the pages for concerns my aunt wouldn’t find them appropriate for her preteen. I don’t support censorship but 2 of them were very dark and I would suggest you look through the pages before gifting it to a young person, particularly someone else’s child.

Otherwise, it’s a really cool and good quality coloring book, especially for lovers of contemporary art. I was so pleased to see pieces by Keith haring and other loved artists I recognized. A great mix of thoughtful and whimsical art for any type of coloring mood you are in.

Much more interesting than a book by just one artist.

Doodlers Anonymous Epic Coloring Book: An Extraordinary Mashup of Doodles and Drawings Begging to be Filled in with Color

Fantastic Cities: A Coloring Book of Amazing Places Real and Imagined

If you’re good with your kids coloring in rainbows and cowboys, there’s plenty out there for you. But if you like the idea of exposing your children to art and inspiring their imaginations, then this the only game in town.

Even if there were other options, it would be hard to beat the extensive list of well-curated artists contributing to this collection. It’s more than a coloring book. It’s art on which your kids are meant to scribble all over.

2.0 out of 5 starsbut I was very disappointed with most of the content

I just love this book – it’s full of coloring pages designed by artists, some as famous as Shepherd Fairey and Keith Haring. Unlike many adult coloring books, the images represent a variety of artistic styles, from anime to post modern to more traditional.

The pages are excellent quality paper and ink does not bleed through (images are on only one side of the page with artist’s name on the back). The only thing I don’t like is that the book is not spiral bound, making it difficult to open flat.

10. Field Guide: Creatures Great and Small by Lucy Engelman: £11, amazon

7. Dream Cities by Rosie Goodwin and Alice Chadwick: £5, amazon

This totally unique coloring book has line drawings of everyone from Keith Haring to Brian Rea. It’s a great idea, fabulous, even, to use the line drawings of famous artists, musicians, designers, etc.

to create yet another coloring book for adults. My main problem was that, to my apparently unsophisticated eye, a lot of these I reacted with a “Huh?” I could’t see how one could color them in the traditional sense.

Some were abstract, or left very little “white space” for one to fill in with anything. Now, for those TRULY wanting to color outside the lines, perhaps CREATE their own lines within each drawing, then it’s for you.

Knock yourself out. It has an almost hip post-modern anime feel to it, which is cool, but it does challenge the garden variety coloring book expectations. I think I was looking for more…”form” within which to color.

Not that I can only do Dick and Jane style drawings, but I wanted more…realistic images, I guess. But that’s just personal taste. This may be just the ticket for you. See if you can take a look inside the book for more examples before buying, would be my suggestion.

1. Enchanted Forest: An Inky Adventure & Colouring Book: £5, amazon

Animorphia goes one step beyond just colouring in, and involves a search element to it as well. You’re given a key at the beginning of the book, full of small objects and weird creatures to spot within the out-there animal-themed illustrations, which range from swordfish to big cats. There’s also spare space for you to complete pictures with your own doodlings.

“When choosing a colouring-in book with more complex or abstract images the convention is generally to keep different colours within different lines. This requires a relaxed focus where the outline is containing and the mark-making repetitive and smooth. So a bit like repeating a mantra where repetition is a means to relaxation, colouring-in is also a type of mediation.”

Lauded as ‘not just a book, but a paper playground’, Fill-Me-In makes a change from some of the more ornate, pattern-focused colouring-in books. Put together by artist and cartoonist Moose Allain, the book kicks off in space, but then flies all over his haphazard galaxy, featuring little people and creatures in all sorts of scenes to either be coloured-in or finished-off. As an added bonus, it’s signed and doodled by the author himself.

What is more chill than colouring in cats? In this book there are 70 intricate, feline-inspired designs to be filled in. It’s just a bit bigger than A5 so be prepared for fine, detailed colouring. When you’re done, we like the fact that all the sheets in this book are detachable, so if you happen to design a particularly chic kitty, you can whip it out and display it.

I’m a 16 year old with a very artistic and creative mind and I went searching for a coloring book to not only color, but to provide me with inspiration for my own artwork. The cover for this book is what grabbed my attention.

It looks like EXACTLY what I like to doodle and observe. The sample of this book on Amazon only had a few pictures to judge, but the reviews promised a book full of beautiful artwork to improve upon with color.

When I got the book, I excitedly opened it up and soaked in all the beautiful artwork. Now some of the art in this book is too good to color than I tore it out and hung it on my wall, while some other pieces are too complicated to color without fine tip art products.

And of course, if you’ve read other reviews, there are two pages of just black ink. But the rest of the book is perfect for coloring and really lets you add your own touch to other artist’s work. The book is amazing and creative and a very good idea, if there was ever another collection of works like these I would by the book in a heartbeat.

From Mel Elliot, the artist who brought us Taylor Swift and Benedict Cumberbatch colouring comes an Eddie Redmayne-dedicated tome. Colour in the Les Mis star as you see fit, or be guided by Elliot’s funny captions. Sample line on a simple illustration of the actor looking suave in a tux: “Eddie is fast running out of awards to win…so design him a new one.” This is probably one for Redmayniacs only but it’s worth checking out Elliot’s other books if you’re looking for a fun gift.

Animal Kingdom has sold over 500,000 copies and been translated into 19 languages. The appeal of her work is the intricate drawings that really immerse you in the world she’s created. In the case of this new book, that’s pages full of exotic creatures from parrots to plant life. The artwork’s exceptional and the paper’s top quality. There’s space to add your own details if you’re feeling particularly creative, too.

“The book’s contents surprise and inspire through a unique world of creativity with each page turned.” —Cool Hunting“The collection represents an awesome range of black-and-whites, most of which wouldn’t look out of place framed on a wall in a home (with or without children).” —Gizmodo   “Coloring books are often thought of as the purview of children, but Outside the Lines shows that coloring can unleash the imagination of child and adult alike…. Outside the Lines is a visual explosion of lines just begging to be filled with color, and is a creative outlet for anyone with an imagination.” —psfk.com“A coloring book that’s a cut above.” —Daily Candy“Say whatever you want about being too old for coloring books, but trust us—you’re going to want this one.” —Nylon”This charming compendium… is as much an invitation to imagine as it is to admire, to savor, to revel in the beauty and inventiveness of the humble line in its infinitely fanciful permutations.” —Brain Pickings”The designs are mesmerizing, and you have the creative freedom to color them and add whatever feeling you think fits.”—HelloGiggles

Forget about the idea that colouring books are for kids. In a busy world, increasingly dominated by time spent in front of screens, grown ups are turning to the soothing art of colouring in. But the books we’re talking about are not reminiscent of the freebie colouring sheets handed out at chain restaurants that we remember from our childhoods. These are intricately designed books, some created specifically to help you de-stress and focus the mind.

“Outside the Lines is an amazing collection of illustrations by some of our favorite contemporary artists – a visual treat no matter your age – much like this colorful celebration.” —Larks Japes

Technically, this is a colouring book and a ‘field guide’, so as well as 35 pages of animals – ranging from butterflies to bears – it gives you facts about the featured creatures and a colouring guide to tell you what they look like in the real world. Of course, if you prefer, you can just freestyle. The pages tear out too so you can display your artwork when you’re done.

But does it work? Can we really find relief in colouring carefully in between the lines? Hephzibah Kaplan, director at the London Art Therapy Centre thinks so.

5. Tropical Wonderland: A Colouring Book Adventure: £4, amazon

I bought this for myself. I am college aged and I like coloring to relieve stress. This book is full of cool, unique designs, and even has some pages that you can add your own detail to. Kids love using this book too.

It’s fun for the whole family!Update: It’s kinda boring, and there are a bunch of pages that I don’t even see the point of coloring, and theres one page that’s solid black. The designs are VERY different, as they’re all by different artists.

I just wasn’t that impressed. Some designs just made no sense and were already shaded in greyscale, so there was nothing to color. It’s not my favorite, but if you’re artistic, you might have fun tweaking the designs or adding your own details.

This little book is handily pocket-sized, so you can pop it in your work bag for the commute. Emma Farrarons is a French illustrator based in London with a background in textile design. You can see the influence of fabric pattern repeat on some of her drawings, which range from simple tessellating geometric designs to more intricate waves and floral-inspired shapes. Emma’s latest book, featuring more nature-themed patterns, is out at the end of September.

For detailed, intricate nature-themed illustrations with a few extras, Johanna Basford’s Enchanted Forest is a winner. If you’re after something creative that you can learn a bit from while you’re colouring, Field Guide: Creatures Great and Small is a good choice.  Moose Allain’s Fill-Me-In book stands out for its is randomness and brings something a bit different to the colouring book table.

This is the follow-up to Johanna Basford’s mega-successful Secret Garden ((over one million copies sold and counting), and for our money, it’s even better than her first effort. Drawings of woodland creatures and greenery are super-detailed and the top-quality paper means pens won’t bleed through. The really beautiful, imaginative illustrations are the stars of the show here, but some colourers will like the quest part; readers must find nine symbols hidden throughout the book in order to “unlock” the castle gate at the end. If you like this one, her next book , an ocean-themed work, is out in October.
